This year is no exception, as Lamborghini has pulled the wraps off the Gallardo LP550-2 Spyder, essentially a convertible version of the Gallardo LP550-2 Valentino Balboni.

As described in the name, the latest Lambo features a longitudinally mounted V10 packing 550 horsepower that is driven exclusively through the rear wheels.

Enter the 2012 Lamborghini Gallardo LP 550-2 Spyder, which debuts not long behind the LP 570-4 Super Trofeo Stradale’s reveal at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show.

The LP550-2 Spyder will be the third two-wheel-drive model sold in the U.S. behind the LP 550-2 Bicolore and the LP 550-2 Coupe. It’s also the third Spyder, which now joins the LP 570-4 Spyder Performante and the LP 560-4 Spyder.

Lamborghini claims the LP 550-2 Sypder will need just 4.2 seconds to accelerate from 0-62 mph, while its top speed is limited to 198 mph.

The first rear-drive roadster convertible from Lamborghini Diablo SV since 1998, the LP550-2 Spyder is rear-drive version of the LP560-4 ragtop for somewhat less money: $ 211,995 (plus a yet-determined gas guzzler tax) versus $ 232,095.

With the Gallardo LP550-2 Spyder, we are expanding the Lamborghini lineup with a purist model that adds yet another dimension of driving fun. "This special model with rear-wheel drive is a logical expansion of our lineup of spyder models with all-wheel drive.
