2013 BMW M5

BMW M5 revealed its new M5 in the flesh to journalists at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca yesterday prior to the Pebble Beach Concours/Monterey Historics weekend. Of course, much of the fifth-generation M5's development occurred on the famous Nordschleife race track.

The 4.4-liter direct-injected reverse-flow twin-turbo V8 develops 560 horsepower from 5,750-7,000 rpm (with a 7,200-rpm redline), along with an even 500 pound-feet of torque from 1,500-5,750 rpm. Maximum boost is 22 psi. And yes, that makes it the most powerful engine ever fitted to a production BMW.

For one thing, it has all new heads, as it's the first M engine to feature BMW's Valvetronic variable valve control system, which the M SUVs don't have.
BMW claims the new M5 with the M DCT will hit 60 mph in 4.4 seconds.
You'd think BMW would've spruced it up a bit to make it a bit more special.

Is the new
BMW M5 what we’re accustomed to expect from BMW’s M division? Um, well, as we discovered during a session in southern Spain, the future of M is big, blustery, red-hot, torque-gushing turbos fitted to smaller engines with mass-production roots. (Despite employing aluminum doors and an aluminum hood, the new M5’s mass creeps to 4300 pounds or so.) So it may not eclipse its predecessor’s 158-foot 70-mph-to-0 braking figure.

Smokes If You Got ’Em
Along with three driver-selectable stability-control modes, three settings for throttle response, three firmness levels for the shocks, and three shift-speed options, the have-it-your-way M5 offers you three steering modes, which progressively reduce boost. There’s so much torque steaming aft that even with an electronically locked clutch-plate differential and larger 295/35 Michelin Pilot SuperSport rear tires, the back end easily breaks grip from a standstill under wide-open acceleration.

The stated reason for the 4.4’s lofty redline is track lappers who may want to hold gears longer, but we suspect the real reason is to pay tribute to M’s heritage of lofty top ends: The old E60’s V-10 spun to 8250.

Manual Transmission in Limbo?

The basics remain the same, but BMW’s throttle-less Valvetronic induction control is deployed on the S63 TU, as are larger turbos and intercoolers, different injectors and control electronics, and a higher compression ratio of 10.0:1.

The power delivery is—dare we say it—almost diesel-like. The Getrag seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, a reinforced version of the M3’s optional unit, is geared tall, with a double overdrive and a 3.15:1 final drive, both to save fuel and to take advantage of the engine’s power curve, or relative lack of curve, as it were. ” says Albert Biermann, vice president of engineering for BMW’s M division. “Solution: scream louder.

One thing
BMW M5 did hear were the complaints about the E60’s small fuel tank.

BMW i8

The BMW i8 gasoline unit drives the rear wheels through a dual clutch transmission, while the electric motor uses a twin-speed transmission to turn the front wheels.

BMW’s second generation 1 Series will be a 2012 model in Europe and continue to be the only rear-wheel-drive model in the class. All engines in the 1 Series are now turbocharged with BMW’s TwinPower turbo – a single dual vane turbo system that reduces lag. Call your
BMW i8 dealer and demand these cars.

The gas engine drives the rear wheels for a perfect 50/50 weigh distribution, but also allowing all-wheel drive when both engines are working.

It also features what
BMW i8 calls LifeDrive architecture, which involves both passenger seating and its propulsion system being based on state-of-the-art methods of cutting weight. The concept is constructed a carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic monocoque.

It also features something called PRO ECO mode, a setting that allows the driver to utilize the most energy efficient method when traveling. Overall, BMW is serious about the
BMW i8 being able to handle various weather situations.

It's reportedly been tested in cold weather around the Arctic Circle.

The sDrive35i is also eligible for BMW's seven-speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission (it also appears on the high-performance M3), while the sDrive 30i makes do with a conventional six-speed automatic. Quite possibly the 2010 BMW Z4.

2010 BMW M6,Review

The 2010 BMW M6 receives BMW's much-improved new iDrive interface, which includes more buttons on the center console, a better menu structure and a hard-drive-based navigation system.

Plain and simple, it's the car's styling. Having said that, we've repeatedly slapped the M6 with two performance-related demerits: The steering feel falls short of BMW's customary high standards, and the lurch-prone SMG single-clutch automated manual is well behind these dual-clutch times. Like other
2010 BMW M6 models, the M6's iDrive gets a new interface with more sensible-to-use menus, extra buttons for accessing oft-used features and a hard-drive-based navigation system.

Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options
The
2010 BMW M6 is offered as either a coupe or convertible. Based on the 6 Series, the M6 comes standard with 19-inch double-spoke wheels, a carbon-fiber roof (coupe only) a body kit (including a more aggressive front airdam, side-sill extensions and a rear diffuser), adaptive xenon headlights, adjustable suspension dampers, leather-upholstered 12-way power front sport seats with driver memory settings, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, Bluetooth, the revised iDrive interface with a hard-drive-based navigation system featuring real-time traffic updates, and a 13-speaker Harman Kardon surround-sound audio system.

Powertrains and Performance
A seven-speed single-clutch automated manual gearbox called SMG is standard, and it can be operated via wheel-mounted shift paddles, manual shift-lever manipulation or a full-automatic mode. The
2010 BMW M6 comes standard with multilevel stability control, antilock disc brakes, front-seat side airbags, side curtain airbags for the coupe, automatic rollover hoops for the convertible and front and rear parking sensors.

A 4.4-liter V8 with an M-developed TwinPower Turbo Package features the M division’s latest technology combined with BMW’s turbocharging know-how. Power is rated at 560 horsepower available from 6,000 to 7,000 rpm, which should keep fans of the M-division’s high-revving engines satisfied.

Despite the power boost,the
2010 BMW M5 says that fuel consumption is down 30 percent thanks to a full complement of EfficientDynamics upgrades, like automatic start/stop and brake energy regeneration.
One thing BMW has not mentioned is availability of a manual transmission.

Specially tuned steering works with the car’s Dynamic Damper Control and stability control with its own M Dynamic tuned mode and an M-specific active electronic locking rear differential to make the best of handling via electronic aids.

All 2010 BMW M5s receive the latest hard-drive-based version of iDrive with a dramatically improved interface and menu structure.
The standard seven-speed sequential manual gearbox (SMG) is a single-clutch automated manual -- a dwindling breed in this era of slick multiclutch gearboxes. The 2010 BMW M5 is a high-performance variant of the midsize 5 Series luxury sedan.

Options include soft-close automatic doors, keyless ignition/entry, fold-down rear seats, upgraded power front seats, a power rear sunshade and manual rear side shades, extended leather trim, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, a head-up display, an upgraded sound system, satellite radio and an iPod interface.

Powertrains and Performance
A conventional six-speed manual transmission is a no-cost option.

Safety
Standard safety equipment on the
2010 BMW M5 includes stability control, full-length side curtain airbags and front-seat side airbags. Rear-seat side airbags are optional.

Driving Impressions
If your heart's set on a
2010 BMW M5 super-sedan, we'd recommend taking a close look at the M5's little brother, the more-enjoyable-to-drive M3 sedan.
