"Innovative technologies like the hands-free automatic tailgate clearly set new Kuga apart from its competitors," said Ford of Europe's chairman and CEO, Stephen Odell.
Ford's advanced voice control, device integration and connectivity interface SYNC will also be available from launch.
Engines available from launch include 140PS and 163PS versions of Ford's popular 2.0-litre TDCi diesel engine, with Ford Powershift automatic gearbox an option.
Ford Kuga will also offer the 1.6-litre EcoBoost petrol engine, already available in Ford Focus and C-MAX and impressing with its strong torque delivery and high fuel efficiency.
The Ford Kuga aligns with the One Ford strategy as a global vehicle, on sale worldwide, including North America, where it is badged Escape.
The vehicle is being launched with a 2.0-liter TDCi diesel unit that comes in two versions, offering 140 or 163 hp. The unit sends its power to the road using an updated all-wheel drive system, which is assisted by a Torque Vectoring Control system.
In the tech department, the Kuga offers a SYNC connectivity system, active park assist and a blind spot information system.
To handle rugged terrain, there's an improved all-wheel drive system which accesses conditions "20 times faster than it takes to blink an eye."
